Alice in Wonderland is a magical movie, but it’s even more magical as an event. I recently stepped out of another Chicago thunderstorm and into Wonderland and everything about it was simply enchanting.
This fun, theatrical, cocktail-laced evening has been making it’s way around the globe (London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles) and Fever & Rabbit Hole Bespoke Gin are now brining it to the best city, Chicago, right by the South Loop. Mad Hatter’s Gin & Tea Party has rave reviews and I personally think it’s because you start the night off with meeting the Cheshire Cat and picking up your very own trinket of gin.
From there you are welcomed into a garden party with tea cups pouring out from the ceiling and lights peaking through tree branches.
When you’re seated at your own private table, you have bite sized British snacks, a few packets of magical ingredients and a stack of tea cups that will feel more like chemical beacons after you mix magical potions throughout the night.
As I opened the mineral water, which was one of my favorite parts of the event, something about cleansing your palette, the rabbit came up to us and offered us hats. We got to choose our own hats and there’s something about dressing up that puts you in a stilly mood. My hat was a mix of popsicle sticks meets Big Bird and my friends hat was pizza meets street dancer.
With our masks still on our face, the girl across from me could see I was struggling with my hat. She smized and I loved how we’ve started to feel more connected to strangers even when 75% of our face is covered with a mask.
I had put my hat on backwards. And I hadn’t even had a drink yet. As I was adjusting, the show began. I was quite surprised when the Mad Hatter had an opening monologue that was more clever than the opening of SNL.
We opened our small glass bottles and took a sip only to realize that I was one shot in. Throughout the night, we were treated to dancing and singing by talented performers and three cups of gin based tea, which you will realize is potent when you’re singing along to Time After Time with the Mad Hatter in the closing act.
Don’t miss your opportunity to sip a series of cocktails led by the Mad Hatter and his eccentric friends in a vibrantly decorated, Instagram-worthy hidden garden.
If you’re looking for a first date idea in Chicago – I would add this one. If your date isn’t fun, atleast this tea party is and it makes for a great conversation piece when there’s that awkward lull.
I had a really great time going with my friend. We didn’t take ourselves too seriously after we put on the hats.
And it wouldn’t be a cocktail and connections evening without properly talking about these gin based tea cocktails. Highlights include The Smoking Caterpillar, a stunning, sophisticated and totally smokin’ drink that combines Rabbit Hole Gin with a dash of Rabbit Hole Boxergrail Rye Whiskey with rosemary flavored smoke bubbles for a touch of wonderfully mad magic.
